Obituary for Jack Gordon McRary

Jack Gordon McRary, 88, of Hamlet, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Richmond County Hospice Haven.

He was born in Oak Hill, NC, March 2, 1934, son of the late Bearl Woodrow McRary and Genelia Zell Tolbert McRary.

Mr. McRary was retired with CSX railroad. In his earlier years, he raced motorcycles and enjoyed drag-racing trucks. He was a man of many talents, especially woodworking. He believed in completing everything he did, even building his own home. He was a caring man and would do anything for anyone. His best attribute was being a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

Freemasonry is many different things to each man who joins the fraternity. For some, it’s a place to make friends and acquaintances. For others, it’s a place to engage in introspection or discuss philosophy. And, it is a place to practice goodwill and charity. For Mr. McRary, being a freemason included all of these. He was a Diamond Jubilee Certificate recipient, having been a mason for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Hamlet Lodge 532. Supporting the Oxford Orphanage for Children was a joy he shared for many years throughout his life.

Mr. McRary was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Douglas McRary; and sister, Glenda McRary.

He is survived by his wife of more than 63 years, Shirley Bruce McRary, of the home; daughters, Janet Alexander (William) of Hanover, Pennsylvania and Jackie Rogers (Jason) of Portsmouth, Virginia; grandchildren, Jack Alexander (Claire) of Abbottstown, Pennsylvania and Jessica Rogers of Portsmouth, Virginia; and great-granddaughter, Autumn Alexander.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 11:30am at Eastside Cemetery, Rockingham, with Pastor Chris Thornton officiating. Burial will follow the service.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the McRary family.
