Obituary for Rebecca "Becky" Ross

Rebecca “Becky” Buckner Ross was born on November 15, 1938 in Durham, NC, to Preston and Pauline Buckner. She was the second oldest of six children. On February 21, 2022, she passed away at First Health- Moore in Pinehurst, NC.

She is survived by her husband, Marty; her children, Dee Gordon (husband, Robert) and Chuck Whicker (wife, Julie); her stepchildren, Debra Gunnell (husband, Mike) and Bonnie Meyers (husband, Neil); her grandchildren, Lee, Rebecca, Garrison, and Gray; and siblings, Dale Buckner (wife, Jackie), Ric Buckner (wife, Pat), Pat Williams (husband, Eddie), Beth Ray (husband, John) and Lennette Honeycutt.

Becky knew no limits in life. If she dreamed it, she did it. As a young mother, she was an avid motorcycle rider, known for making long trips up the coast to Canada. She sang bass in several barbershop quartets, competed in Sweet Adelines International, and won many contests. In August 2018, she traveled to Nashville, TN, where she recorded a studio album with her quartet, Endangered Species. In 2009, she entered her first and only pageant and was crowned Ms. North Carolina Senior America. She was a business-owner, a certified life coach, a makeup salesperson, a stained-glass artist and a florist. She drafted an autobiography, wrote a children’s book, and composed an original lullaby. With each new thing, her family and friends joked lovingly, “What’s next for Becky?” Her lust for life was infectious, challenging each person who crossed her path to reconsider their own potential.

She had an abundance of love in her life. Nothing fed her soul more than to have her house packed with her “loud, obnoxious family.” Married three times, Becky would say she was fortunate to find a soulmate in each of her husbands, Charles, Sonny and Marty. She considered her siblings and their spouses her best friends, and she touted her self-appointed role of “favorite aunt” to her 4 nieces, 8 nephews, 26 great nieces and nephews, and 2 great-great nieces and nephews. She adored her children, Dee and Chuck, and cheered them on through their own projects and pursuits. She cherished when they would replay her days of motherhood, though publicly she’d dismiss the tales as exaggerations. On being a grandparent, she often said: “It’s a magnification of love.” For her grandchildren, she created adventures big and small, from a cross-country RV trip to decorating “gingerbread” houses at Christmas. She nurtured an intimacy and friendship with her grandkids that was apparent to anyone who witnessed it.

Becky leaves behind a legacy of generous and unconditional love, hot glue and rhinestones, a flair for the dramatic, and a determination to make the most of life. Now we take her lead and remember this: don’t forget to slop your dripper! We love you more.

The family will receive friends Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 1-2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 201 N. Randolph St., Rockingham, NC, with the service to be held at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jack Lee officiating.
